Funding Overview

Introduction

Museums Galleries Scotland distributes funding from the Scottish Government to support development in Scottish museums. MGS’s regular funding programme has been suspended to allow flexibility to respond to the situation brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Funding Overview

Our Covid response programme has consisted of several phases of funding. Currently we have two funds open for applications:

COVID-19 Adaptation Fund

This fund will support independent museums with the costs of opening back up in a way that ensures the safety and confidence of staff, volunteers and visitors while restrictions are still in place due to COVID-19. The fund will support costs of essential adaptations, equipment and training. We are accepting applications on a rolling basis and expect to close the fund on 22 March 2021.

Recovery and Resilience Fund

Through the first round of this fund we distributed £4.6 million amongst 90 independent museums across Scotland put at risk by the pandemic, supporting them with operating costs and activity to help them achieve greater financial sustainability.

With additional funding from the Scottish Government we are now running a second round. Independent museums can apply for support with operating costs through to 30 June 2021 and with resilience building activity.

We welcome applications from new applicants and applicants who applied to round 1. Any organisation wishing to apply to the fund is required to submit an expression of interest to MGS no later than midday on 19 February

During 2020 we ran three other funds that are now permanently closed.

The COVID-19 Museum Development Fund had two rounds of funding closing on 13 November 2020 and 5 February 2021 supporting Local Authority museums, museums managed by ALEOs and University museums to deliver projects that will help these organisations to build resilience and address challenges brought about by the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Urgent Response Fund ran from April to August 2020 providing urgent support to independent museums and galleries critically affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. .

The Digital Resilience Fund ran from April to July 2020, making awards totalling more than £110,000 to support the purchase of equipment necessary to enable work from home and provision of digital access to museum collections and activity.
