Funding Overview

Funding Overview

Museums Galleries Scotland distributes funding from the Scottish Government to support development in Scottish museums. Details of the 2022/23 funding programme can be found below.

Our Funding Programme

The majority of our investment in the sector is distributed through two funds:

Small Grants Fund

Grants of between £300 and £15,000 are available to all types of Accredited museums in Scotland. Museums that currently hold a temporary Accreditation number and formal “Working Towards Accreditation” status will also be able to apply for limited sums through this fund (max £5,000).

The fund can support costs associated with activity to build operational resilience, re-engage with communities and audiences, address critical repairs or maintenance (including collections work) or improve environmental sustainability. As well as small scale project activity, it can support essential non-project costs that you are struggling to meet as a result of the ongoing financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it cannot support core operating costs.

There will be three rounds of funding in 2022/23 with closing dates at the start of July and in September and January 2023. Please read the details about the fund - click below for more information, and then contact the MGS Grants Team to discuss any ideas you have for an application.

Museum Development Fund

Grants of between £15,000 and £50,000 (up to £60,000 for Recognised Collections) are available to Accredited museums in Scotland to support them to make strategic steps towards becoming more resilient organisations in line with the aims of the National Strategy.

We will fund projects that will help you to strategically develop core or new work and we will prioritise applications for projects about; developing digital capacity; re-engaging with communities; workforce capacity and resilience; building resilience; responding to the climate emergency.

There will be two rounds of funding in 2022/23 with closing dates in June and at the end of October. Please read the details about the fund - click below for more information, and then contact the MGS Grants Team to discuss any ideas you have for an application.

More Information

Support for Making an Application

All potential applicants should contact the MGS Grants Team before beginning work on an application to any of our funds. We will run grant surgeries in advance of the Museum Development Fund deadlines where you can book a one to one appointment to discuss an application you are planning with a member of the Grants Team. However, you can also contact the grants team at anytime with queries at or on 0131 550 4115. The surgeries will be running on 22 and 23 August 2022 and you can book a slot on our event pages.

Making an Application

Applications must be made through MGS Online. Full details about the individual funds and how to apply can be found on the individual funding pages.

Whilst we do not place limitations on the numbers of applications any one museum can make, in the interests of fair distribution of funds, the size of your organisation and any previous grants from us to your organisation will be taken into account during our assessment. It is highly unlikely that we would be able to offer one organisation of any size more than two Small Grants and two Museum Development Fund grants in one year.
