Funding Overview

Museums Galleries Scotland distributes funding from the Scottish Government to support development in Scottish museums. Details of the 2022/23 funding programme can be found below.

Our Funding Programme

Museums and the communities they serve are facing significant financial challenges and MGS is responding to this by repurposing its grant funding for the rest of the financial year. Rather than continuing to offer our Small Grants Fund and Museum Development Fund, we are inviting Accredited museums to apply to a single Resilience Fund.

There will be no further rounds of the Small Grants Fund or the Museum Development Fund this year. However, we are pleased to announce the launch of 'The Great Escape' fund, a major UK wide, participatory project from Art Fund supported by a major National Lottery Project Grant from Arts Council England. The funding programme for 2023/24 will be announced early in the new year.

Resilience Fund

Grants of between £1,500 and £50,000 are available to Accredited museums for projects that will directly increase their resilience by enabling them to:

  • reduce costs
  • increase income
  • support their communities

Because of the potential to reduce costs in the long term and to achieve positive impact in response to the climate emergency, applications to implement energy efficiency measures will be prioritised.

There will be two rounds of funding available with closing dates on 28 November 2022 and 30 January 2023. Please read the details about the fund – click below for more information, and then contact the MGS Grants Team to discuss any ideas you have for an application.

Support for Making an Application

All potential applicants should contact the MGS Grants Team before beginning work on an application to any of our funds. This is a mandatory requirement for anyone wishing to apply to the Resilience Fund. We will announce dates for future grant surgeries, where you can book a one-to-one appointment to discuss an application you are planning with a member of the Grants Team, when the 2023/24 programme is launched. However, you can also contact the grants team at any time with queries at or on 0131 550 4115.

Making an Application

Applications must be made through MGS Online. Full details about the individual funds and how to apply can be found on the individual funding pages.

Whilst we do not place limitations on the numbers of applications any one museum can make, in the interests of fair distribution of funds, the size of your organisation and any previous grants from us to your organisation will be taken into account during our assessment.
