Museums Galleries Scotland distributes funding from the Scottish Government to support development in Scottish museums. MGS’s regular funding programme has been suspended to allow flexibility to respond to the situation brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Our Covid response programme has consisted of several phases of funding. Currently we have two funds open for applications:
Recovery and Resilience Fund
This £4 million fund will help to secure the future of independent Scottish museums put at risk by the pandemic and protect the vital role that they play in their communities. It will do so by supporting museums with operating costs (up until 31 March 2021) or with activity that will help them to achieve greater financial sustainability by 31 March 2021. The fund is open to applications from independent museums run by not for profit organisations and that meet the MA definition of a museum up until 30 October 2020.
COVID-19 Museum Development Fund.
This fund is open to Local Authority museums, museums managed by ALEOs and University museums and can support projects that will help these organisations to build resilience and address challenges brought about by the Coronavirus pandemic. Priority will be given to projects focussed on re-engaging with communities, developing digital capacity and workforce capacity and resilience. There will be two rounds of funding closing on 13 November 2020 and 5 February 2021.
Our COVID-19 Adaptation Fund is currently closed to new applications. This fund, which opened in June, has made awards totalling £330,000 to support museums with the costs of opening back up in compliance with government guidelines around Covid 19. The fund is currently closed to allow us to focus on delivering our other response funds. We are aware that those museums planning to open in 2021 are also facing the need to make adaptations and we hope to be able to open this fund again in the new year.
Earlier in the year we ran two other funds that are now permanently closed.
The Urgent Response Fund ran from April to August 2020 providing urgent support to independent museums and galleries critically affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. .
The Digital Resilience Fund ran from April to July 2020, making awards totalling more than £110,000 to support the purchase of equipment necessary to enable work from home and provision of digital access to museum collections and activity.
